The Cisco VNI PC Pulse was a free desktop application created by Cisco Systems. It was part of Cisco’s larger Visual Networking Index (VNI) program. Cisco used this program to track and predict how much internet data the world used.

The PC Pulse app was made for Windows computers. It helped everyday people understand how much internet data they were using. It also showed how their desktop computers added to global data growth. What Did the PC Pulse App Do?

The application worked right on a user’s computer to track daily internet habits. It focused on three main features:

Measured Data Types: The app tracked how much data went to web browsing, video streaming, and email.

Created an “IP DNA”: It turned your data habits into a personal abstract picture.

Global Comparisons: Users could compare their data numbers to average scores around the world. Understanding Desktop Traffic Growth

During the time Cisco ran this project, internet traffic was growing very fast. Cisco used data from tools like PC Pulse to explain big changes in how we use desktops: 📹 Video Was King

Desktop data grew mostly because people started watching a lot of online video. Video files are much larger than text or images. Cisco noted that high-definition video conferencing and video streaming were taking over most of the bandwidth. 📉 The Shift Away from PCs

Even though desktop traffic grew, the share of desktop traffic began to drop. Cisco’s data showed that smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs were taking over. Desktops used to generate almost all internet traffic, but mobile devices soon took the lead.
